When is a cigarette not a cigarette? Perhaps when it’s an e-cigarette! That’s “e-“ for electric cigarette, of course. Sometimes they are misspelled as electric cigeretts.

A Chinese pharmacist invented this device in 2003, and it has been on the American market for at least five years. These battery-powered, cigarette-resembling devices heat up a think liquid solution within the ‘cartridge’ of the electric cigarette, producing a water vapor that the smoker inhales. Cartridges are rated as containing different levels of nicotine, including ones without any of the substance, and also come with different flavorings added.

The main differences between a traditional and electric cigarette are that the modern substitute does not produce true smoke from burning tobacco, instead releasing an aerosol (water vapor) that usually contains nicotine. Therefore the e-cigarette does not produce the smell of a tobacco cigarette. Also, the vapor contains only a few chemical substances in it, compared with hundreds, possibly thousands, contained in true cigarette smoke. Because of this, some non-smokers find them easier to tolerate. Whether this difference will allow electric cigeretts to be smoked in situations where regular cigarettes are banned is still an open question however. These devices are new enough that there are not many, if any, legal cases on record to begin establishing legal precedence for or against their use. Time will tell!

This also may be related to many aspects of e-smoking and real smoking being physically similar – the inhaling, the holding of the cigarette, etc. Many smokers realize that part of their attraction to smoking is in repeating some of these little “rituals” associated with smoking.

The potential advantages of the electric cigarette are several: They have little or no smell to them, and thus should be less offensive to non-smokers. Whether this fact will allow electric cigarettes to be used indoors has not been legally determined yet. Those choosing e-cigarettes for health reasons are attracted by the fact that the vapor produced by the device does not contain as many cancer causing (carcinogenic) compounds. Some people find that they smoke fewer real cigarettes if they use the e-cigarette on some of their breaks.
